David Lee · a digital teacher

There is a room upstairs, and there is a trip you keep not booking. Only one of those is yours to move.

I was that kid for eleven years. My mother paid for all of it and nobody ever said a word about it, including me.

Free. Thirty-two pages, and one page for the fridge comes with it.

It is free. It does not ask you to decide anything about your house before you have read it.

What You’re Standing On, a reading in ten steps

What You’re Standing On

It has a name, and it has a shape. It does the same four things in every house it turns up in, and it is not spoiling and it is not a character. I was the one in my old room for eleven years — this is what it looks like from that side of the door.

The Height Card comes with it — one page for the fridge, the three heights in the order they cost you.

Who is saying this

I was the son. Not the parent.

I am not a therapist. I am not a coach. I have no certificate of any kind and I am not going to pretend otherwise.

I lived at my parents’ house from twenty-four to thirty-four and I let my mother pay for it. She died in 2019 without ever knowing that I understood what I had done.

The years since have not been grief. They have been work — going back through it properly, one piece at a time, until I could say where it went wrong instead of only that it did.

I went home for three months. My father helped me carry the boxes in, and they did not go to the basement — they went straight into my old room. The whole eleven years were decided by where those boxes were put. Not by a conversation. By a floor.

Before you give me anything

Three things this is not, and one house it is wrong for

  • It will not empty that room. I cannot sell you somebody else’s decision, and anyone who says otherwise is selling you another year of waiting.
  • It will not tell you it is not your fault — and it will not tell you it is. Ten of the forty-two say leave it alone, and I mean them.
  • It is not therapy and it is not medical advice. If something is actually wrong — a diagnosis, an addiction — I am the wrong man.
  • And if you are afraid in your own house — not worried, afraid — none of this is for you. That house does not need an experiment. It needs help, and I am not the one who gives it.

You cannot push anyone out. You can have your Sundays back — and that starts tonight, with one plate in the sink.
